Inclusion in Action: Strengthening Communities Through Volunteerism

Guided by its mission to improve lives by harnessing the caring power of communities, Granite United Way connects individuals and families with the resources and support they need to thrive while bringing together nonprofits, businesses, volunteers, schools, and community leaders to build stronger, more connected communities. We interviewed Christina Huntress, Community Engagement Director, to discuss the actions that GUW and its network of volunteers are taking to foster a more resilient, inclusive community.

How does Granite United Way help create supportive and inclusive environments for children and families within the community?

Granite United Way invests in programs and partnerships that strengthen access to essential services, educational opportunities, health resources, and family support systems. Through initiatives such as 211 NH, Recovery Friendly Workplace, grantmaking efforts, and volunteer engagement programs, the organization connects individuals and families with critical resources while working alongside schools, family resource centers, nonprofits, businesses, and community leaders.

By reducing barriers and increasing access to support, Granite United Way helps ensure that children and families can feel safe, stable, connected, and empowered regardless of their background, income, or circumstances.

Why are volunteer programs and community involvement such an important part of Granite United Way’s mission?

Volunteerism is at the core of Granite United Way’s mission because meaningful and lasting change is achieved when communities come together in support of one another. Volunteers help strengthen local nonprofits, expand the reach of essential services, and address challenges that no single organization can solve alone.

Programs such as Day of Caring and other year-round volunteer opportunities bring together individuals, businesses, and community leaders to create measurable impact throughout New Hampshire. These efforts not only address immediate needs but also strengthen community connections and civic engagement.

Can you share an example of how volunteers or family support programs have positively impacted local families or children?

Granite United Way supports children and families through programs focused on basic needs, crisis response, and long-term stability. Through 211 NH, families can access resources including food assistance, housing support, childcare services, mental health support, and financial assistance.

In addition, Whole Village, Granite United Way’s Family Resource Center in Plymouth, provides parenting support, wellness services, food and diaper assistance, and child development resources at no cost to families.

Volunteer initiatives also make a significant difference. During this year’s Day of Caring, volunteers completed projects ranging from playground revitalization and community space improvements to preparing thousands of wound care kits for outreach programs and supporting veterans’ services. These efforts allow nonprofit organizations to dedicate more time and resources directly to the individuals and families they serve.

Why is access to childcare, family support, and community resources so important for building stronger communities?

According to Granite United Way, strong communities are built through connection, opportunity, and shared responsibility. When families have access to reliable childcare, healthcare, housing assistance, food resources, and mental health support, they are better positioned to overcome challenges before they become long-term barriers.

Access to childcare is particularly important, as it supports healthy child development while also enabling caregivers to remain engaged in the workforce. These resources contribute not only to family stability but also to the economic vitality and overall well-being of the broader community.

How do organizations like Granite United Way help create a stronger sense of belonging within the community?

A strong sense of belonging develops when individuals feel seen, heard, and supported. Granite United Way helps foster this connection by bringing people together through volunteer opportunities, partnerships, community conversations, and collaborative initiatives such as the Concord Connections Coalition, which focuses on strengthening resources for young children and families.

These efforts help build relationships, reduce isolation, and create communities where people feel connected to one another and invested in shared success

How have local businesses and community partners helped support Granite United Way’s mission?

Community partnerships are fundamental to Granite United Way’s success. Local businesses contribute through volunteerism, sponsorships, workplace giving campaigns, and the sharing of expertise and resources. These partnerships expand the reach of community programs while providing meaningful opportunities for employees to engage with the communities where they live and work.

Addressing challenges such as housing instability, food insecurity, mental health concerns, and family support requires collaborative solutions. By working together, businesses, nonprofits, volunteers, and community leaders can create stronger, more resilient communities for everyone.

What does inclusion mean to you personally, and why does it matter?

“Inclusion means creating spaces where people feel welcomed, respected, safe, and able to fully participate as their authentic selves.”

Granite United Way believes inclusion extends beyond simply inviting people to participate. It requires ensuring that voices are heard, experiences are respected, and barriers to participation are intentionally addressed.

This commitment is essential because stronger communities are created when every individual has the opportunity to contribute, belong, and access the support they need to succeed.
