Local Government Affairs
City councilors Amanda Grady Sexton, Jennifer Kretovic and Michele Horne were guests at our January meeting, and had the opportunity to hear directly from local business leaders who discussed some of the committee’s top priorities—economic development, tax base expansion and the development process. It was a valuable discussion, with community members sharing concrete examples of challenges that their businesses face in the city. State Government Affairs
It’s a new legislative season, which means this committee is reconvening to review more than 1,100 LSRs (the precursor to a bill) that have already been filed. This year, the Chamber is partnering with the Business and Industry Association (BIA) and other chambers and associations throughout the state to track legislation affecting the business community. This partnership is intended to give businesses a more effective voice before the legislature. At a recent luncheon meeting at the BIA, representatives from more than 20 chambers and associations discussed key issues including workforce, housing, energy, fiscal policy, and more. While various chambers and the BIA may have differing priorities on some issues, the areas of common interest are far greater. With a new governor and legislature in place, it is bound to be a lively and interesting session.
